Hello, I was molested by my uncle when I was a teenager. Till date I get horrible dreams about it. I know people say that get over it, but it is easier said than done. What do you suggest?

Dear Nima, I am really sorry to hear about your painful experience.I am sure you can get over it soon. There are many steps that you can take to overcome this feeling of hurt. Emotional trauma often leaves longterm negative impacts on the mind. You will need to train your mind to unlearn all the experiences. It may not be easy and you will require help of your close friends or family. Educate yourself on the process by learning on the subject of child abuse and the possible remedies to overcome that. The more you will know and understand , the more ways you will discover to move ahead. Spend quality time with people you love and people who make you comfortable. Do things that interest you and keep your thought process busy. Do not let your mind sit ideal to have the thoughts about your experience coming in,and still if they do, practice deep breathing. Inhale and exhale several times. Deep breathing relaxes the nervous system and calms emotional alarm circuits unwittingly set off when experience triggers your trauma zone.Also take good care of yourself.Pay attention to the care of the body. Being connected to your body has the additional advantage of delivering you from feelings of helplessness.Exercise is vitally important in improving the way you feel. It increases your capacity to withstand emotional challenges. It boosts confidence in yourself and generates well-being. It also increases your sense of control over experience. Slow and steady progress will happen. Please try and do tell me if you feel the difference.
